Report: Germany Cup in Oberhof 2002

For some members of the AHFC it was again said: “Lets go to Oberhof!”, where the Germany Cup of the biathletes took place from 20th-22nd December. On the one hand we wanted to support Janet a bit, on the other hand we wanted to use the opportunity to scrutinize the new stadium closely at once.

While Markus and Joerg already came to Oberhof on Friday evening, Danthe and Juergen arrived in the early morning hours of Saturday – just on time for the sprint competitions. After we all had muffled up warmly, we set off for the stadium. Unfortunately, the typical fog of Oberhof welcomed us again and completely refused us seeing the shooting range… So we diligently started to count penalty loops not to lose track. At the women’s, who started off together with the juniors because of the small number of competitors, Sabu won in front of Janet and Ina Menzel. The men’s competition was won by Joern Wollschlaeger in front of Marco Morgenstern and Carsten Heymann.

After the competitions had been finished we wanted to go somewhere, where it is warm and first of all dry as soon as possible. Therefore, we decided to go to the „Cortina D’Ampezzo“... Anyway, out of a short coffee break became a long afternoon with a lot of narratives told by our Sweden-boys and stories about everything under the sun. Towards 7 p.m. we finally left and set off for the house of the guests where the presentation ceremonies should take place. Because of the multitude of starters and competitions they lasted approximately an hour. Afterwards we continued our pub hop – now in the “Felix”, the local pub of the AHFC. Again we had some funny hours until far after midnight. Then Markus said goodnight to us and we decided for a change of place. We had heard about the „So und So“, where the atmosphere was said to be very good. Here we even got the chance to play darts, first all against each other, then “men versus women”, which means Joerg and Juergen versus Danthe and Kitec, who joined us company this weekend. Well, the slot machine must have been manipulated somehow – or how would it otherwise have been possible that only the men were able to win??? Probably it was the schnapps drunk at the shooting match, because they clearly had more of it inside themselves than the women! ;o))) After we had locked up the local behind ourselves again, we went to bed soon, so that we would be at least a little bit fit the next morning again.

On Sunday the pursuit competitions of all starter groups where on the program. The weather was even nastier than the day before, but we were in good mood anyway and spurred on the athletes strongly. Within the women’s competition the final result of the pursuit was the same as the day before. At the men’s Marco Morgenstern won in front of Carsten Heymann and Kristian Mehringer this time. After warming up with coffee again, our routes separated and everyone went one’s own way home.

Résumé: The visit in Oberhof was short but as every time it was worth it. The stadium did get trough it’s competition premier successfully and if the weather plays along and there will be enough snow, nothing stands in the way for the world cup in January. And then there will maybe be revenge in darts as well... ;o)
